Teaching and Learning at Blackpool Skills Academy

Our Approach to Great Teaching

At Blackpool Skills Academy, we believe that effective teaching is built on clarity, consistency, strong relationships and high expectations. Many of our students have experienced disruption in their education, so we place particular importance on calm, predictable lessons that help young people feel safe, focused and ready to learn.

Across the academy, staff use a shared approach to lesson structure known internally as our Effective Lesson Toolbox. This helps create a consistent learning experience in every classroom, while still allowing teachers to respond to the needs of their subject and their students.

Evidence-Informed Practice

Our teaching approach is informed by recognised educational research and widely used professional development models, including Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction and the WalkThrus approach to teaching and instructional coaching.

We do not use these approaches as a script. Instead, they help shape a common language for teaching across the academy, supporting staff to plan lessons that are clear, purposeful and accessible.

The Effective Lesson Toolbox

Our Effective Lesson Toolbox gives staff a simple and consistent rhythm for lessons. It supports students by making learning feel structured and manageable. The following poster is in all classrooms to ensure all stakeholders are involved and aware.

Consistency Across the Academy

All teaching staff use the Effective Lesson Toolbox as a shared framework. This does not mean every lesson looks exactly the same. It means students experience familiar routines, clear explanations, regular practice and purposeful feedback across the academy.

This consistency is especially important for learners who may have found mainstream education difficult. Predictable routines reduce uncertainty, support behaviour and help students concentrate on the learning itself.

Teaching That Builds Confidence

Our aim is not only to help students gain qualifications, but to rebuild confidence, develop independence and see themselves as capable learners.

Through structured lessons, vocational learning, academic support and strong relationships, we help students make progress step by step. Small successes matter. Over time, they build self-belief, resilience and ambition.
