Admissions and the School Day

Joining Blackpool Skills Academy

At Blackpool Skills Academy, we specialise in supporting young people aged 11 to 16 with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. Our students typically struggle (or have struggled) in mainstream education and many students have an (EHCP) Education, Health and Care Plan (or are waiting on their assessment) and benefit from a personalised curriculum and their own Personal Learning Plan (PLP).

We work closely with schools, families and professionals to review each student's progress every year through the statutory EHCP review process. Together, we celebrate achievements and set new goals for the future.

Admissions to Blackpool Skills Academy are managed by our partner schools - who typically send students on a 2- to 3-days per week basis whilst still attending their mainstream school. Schools may also elect to send students full-time following our Ofsted registration.

We also receive referrals from Local Authorities and students attend on a more substantial timetable - this includes on a full-time basis.

Once a referral has been received, parents and carers are welcome to visit the Academy to learn more about what we offer and to see our community in action.

If you would like more information about the admissions process, you can view our admissions policy on the key information page.

Our School Day

Our school day starts at 8.45am. Most students travel to school using transport arranged by their school but many of our students make their own way - we have an excellent central Blackpool location close to all public transport.

Lessons and activities finish at 3.00pm from Monday to Friday for full-time students. Part-time students will be encouraged to follow these hours, but this will depend on school arrangements and individual needs.

Students spend up to 31 hours in school each week, enjoying a supportive environment designed to help them achieve their very best.

This does not include any after-school activities.
